Borrowed Batiks

Well not really borrowed…gifted is more like it.

My sister in law, Mary Lynn, a new quilter, with a definite passion for her new obsession has signed up for more classes than Libby has Beans. And I have more fabric than I will ever, ever be able to sew up in my lifetime, so I have been gifting her fabric.

She was able to make this lovely runner at her latest class from just 2.5 inch strips of batik leftovers I had stashed away.

I am so glad that someone is making good use of all the stash of fabric. I told her not to buy any more fabric until she checked what I have. I swear, the two of us could quilt to our hearts content for the next ten years, and still make no dent in the inventory.

Leftover Logs

I have been really trying hard to finish my abundance of  UFO’s. It seems endless…..I know that I am not the only quilter with this dilemma. Every time I open a drawer or cabinet to look for a new project to start, something with a pile of dust on it, jumps out and yells…FINISH ME!

That’s what happened when I came across these half finished log cabin blocks. I swear these must well over 10 years in the making as I did not recognize any of the fabric in them. If I can remember correctly, these were suppose to resemble a queen size quilt, but with only 9 blocks done, it was far from fruition.

The fabric is not the best(I recognise that now)so to continue making the quilt would really be a waste. But I hade 9 finished ones, so what could I make from the ones I had done?

Dear eldest sister is always hinting for quilts when she  visits so I think I could squeeze these into a table runner for her kitchen.

Let’s turn them on point, add some setting triangles and a border and call it a day. DONE!

I quilted it with the pantograph called Folk Hearts…so good to have another thing cleared our of the to do pile.

Can’t see the forest for the trees

I’m finally catching up…I finished Doodle Doodles free BOM’s block 5.

I have been changing the patterns a little….the patterns call for 2.5 inch squares ot half square triangles of the same size…..let’s face it…that would take forever! I have been revamping and instead of making the block from all those little squares, I’m adding the squares up, subtracting the seam allowances and making the rows in blocks of rectangles….anything to get r’ done!  The blocks still turn our  super cute.

Pillow Talk

That’s actually the name of the company that makes these sweet fabric panels…Pillow Talk. You can get all sorts of sayings…Quilters, Friends, Sisters, Mothers, Daughters…and the list goes on and on. I chose Quilters and the little slogans and sayings are so appropriate.

I framed the panel using on point fusible grid…nice and easy using 2X2 squares from my scrap stash. A simple angle lined quilting finishes off the project.

Picture This

This is my newest creation…a creative I spy quilt for my Grandson Owen. When his brother Ayden was born , he had a quilt made for him even before he entered this world. You know what happens with the second, the third and so on….we get waylaid…. poor Owen is 2 1/2 and just now getting his quilt ( Bad Nana)….well actually he’s not even getting it yet, it’s at Kindred Spirits on display.

I’ve made a few traditional I spy quilts over the years and wanted something a little more modern, so the polaroid blocks that have been popping up all over the place…seemed to be the perfect venue.
An appliqued vintage Polaroid camera, 20 of his favourite fabric choices and a picture is worth a thousand words, as they say.

Christmas is just round the corner

Debbie will be ready and waiting to put this stunning Christmas quilt on her bed to celebrate the season. This was another of the quilts that was selected for Niagara Heritage Quilt Guild’s show at Quilt Canada.
I’m pretty confident that Debbie told me it was from a Quiltmaker magazine pattern that she saw and fell in love with.

Log Cabin Creations

The  ladies in my Log Cabin Class have made great headway with their blocks. Many of the ladies have completed their quilts while some who chose a larger version are still diligently working thru the blocks. Patience ladies, patience.

Pat and Myra chose the same layout and both creations look fab!

I absolutely love the way the star pops on Priscilla’s layout  and Jean’s original choice was a good one.

Holly and Ann could not go wrong with the fields and furrow layout option. I am so proud of all the ladies, you all did amazing!

A million little pieces

Well not quite, but pretty close.

Debbie brought me this spectacular pieced quilt to be longarmed and it is a beauty. Look at all the hour glass blocks. Debbie told me that the quilt was selected for Niagara Heritage Quilt Guild’s show at Quilt Canada, and I can see why. It is made up of  588 blocks in total….oh what patience you must have had to complete it Debbie…..awesome.

I couldn’t wait to show you

When we were at Spring Market I saw a quilt that just spoke to me. It was a free pattern offered by Michael Miller from A Fashionista Quilt Studio. Her original design was more geared to fashion and sewing with zippers and buttons, but I knew I could make some changes and gear it more to quilting.

 

I had a stash of fabric prints from the line  La Petite Mercerier called Sewing Sampler by Lecien that I used for the background and for the outside border. Instead of adding zippers and buttons I opted to embroider Quilt and Press around mine with an appliqued needle, bobbin and pin cushion. The quilt needs to be long armed prior to adding the dress. Love it, love it, love it! I’ll show you the complete finished quilt in a few days.

Fabric Addict

She’s arrived…at Kindred Spirits..you can see her in person there. She will be a class this fall offered for all the die hard doll fans, so that you can get your fix. Super cute, super (fairly) simple  and designed by Amy Bradley.

She has such detail…from her beaded earrings, to her shopping bag, her slippers including socks, her purse, even her little bra and panties and all this while standing on bolts of fabric.

I’m not bugged at all

In fact I’m delighted with this newest addition called the Beatle Bag. We saw this pattern at Spring Quilt Market and it was an instant hit for us and we knew that it would be a hit with the quilters at Kindred Spirits Quilt Company as well.

A great little carry all for your quilting tools…scissors, cutter…even has it’s own pincushion. It comes with these clear plastic zippered pouches so you can actually See and Find your stuff.

These would be great for make-up bags as well or even a Lego holder as my grandson Ayden suggested while he posed for the picture. Looks like I’ll be busy making a few more of these. The pattern is from Abby Lane and the pattern even comes complete with a set of the plastic zippered pouches.

From humble beginnings

Comes gorgeous log cabin quilts. These are the starter blocks of the ladies in my Log Cabin Class at Kindred Spirits. Wow what a large class…8 in total. It was wonderful to see so many of the ladies from my beginner class carrying on the obsession.

Priscilla, Jean, Holly and Ann are off to a great start. Gorgeous choices of fabrics, I can’t wait to see the final creations.

Myra, Pat, Mary Lynn and Kelly are making headway with their beautiful fabric options as well and I know that once all the blocks are completed we will have some amazing log cabin quilts to be cherished for years. Can’t wait!
